前言 :
电火花线切割加工(Wire Electrical Discharge Machining, WEDM)是一种利用电极丝与工件之间产生放电,进行金属切割的精密加工技术。依据电极丝的运动方式与走丝速度不同,线切割机主要可分为快走丝(High-Speed)、中走丝(Medium-Speed)与慢走丝(Low-Speed / Wire Cut EDM) 三种类型。

High-Speed Wire EDM
High-Speed Wire EDM uses molybdenum or tungsten wire as the electrode, operating in a high-speed reciprocating motion with a wire speed of approximately 8–10 m/s. It offers high cutting speed and relatively low machine cost, making it suitable for general machining and rough cutting applications.
However, due to the wire reversal movement during operation, vibration and instability may occur, resulting in lower machining accuracy and surface quality. Typical accuracy ranges from ±0.02 to ±0.05 mm, with a surface roughness of approximately Ra 6.3 μm. Therefore, it is generally used for applications with lower precision requirements.
Medium-Speed Wire EDM
Medium-Speed Wire EDM is an upgraded version of High-Speed systems. By optimizing wire speed and enabling multiple cutting passes, it improves machining quality.
With a wire speed ranging from approximately 1–12 m/s, its accuracy and surface finish fall between High-Speed and Low-Speed Wire EDM. While it offers better surface quality than High-Speed machines, its overall stability and precision still cannot match Low-Speed Wire EDM, making it suitable for medium-precision applications.
Low-Speed Wire EDM (Wire Cut EDM)
Low-Speed Wire EDM uses brass or zinc-coated wire as the electrode, with a continuous one-directional wire movement at a low speed (typically below 0.2 m/s). Since there is no wire reversal, the machining process is highly stable with minimal vibration, enabling superior precision and surface finish.
Low-Speed Wire EDM can achieve machining accuracy up to ±0.002 mm, with surface roughness ranging from Ra 0.2 to 0.8 μm. Through multi-cut finishing processes, both surface quality and dimensional accuracy can be further enhanced.
As a result, Low-Speed Wire EDM is widely used in:
1. Precision mold manufacturing
2. Aerospace components
3. Semiconductor materials processing

Key Differences Between Types of Wire EDM
The primary differences among these three types of Wire EDM lie in the electrode wire, wire movement method, and machining capability. High-Speed and Medium-Speed machines typically use reusable molybdenum wire with reciprocating motion, while Low-Speed Wire EDM uses disposable brass wire with continuous one-directional movement, resulting in more stable machining performance.
In terms of machining performance, Low-Speed Wire EDM significantly outperforms the other two in linear accuracy, roundness, surface finish, and fine detail capability, making it the preferred solution for high-precision manufacturing.
How to Choose the Right Wire EDM Machine?
If your application requires:
1. High-precision components
2. Precision mold manufacturing
3. Superior surface finish
4. Complex geometries or fine features
Low-Speed Wire EDM (Wire Cut EDM) is strongly recommended to ensure machining quality and long-term production stability.
For general machining or cost-sensitive applications, High-Speed or Medium-Speed Wire EDM may be more economical options.
